How to Care for Your Knitwear: Make It Last All Season
Knitwear is an investment in comfort, and a little care goes a long way towards keeping it soft, shapely and pill-free for years to come. Here's how to look after your Josh Blush sweaters properly.
1. Check the label before you wash
Always check the care label on your specific piece before washing. As a general rule, most knitwear prefers a gentle, cold wash cycle, or hand washing where possible. Hot water is one of the fastest ways to cause shrinking and loss of shape.
2. Turn it inside out
Turning your sweater inside out before washing helps protect the outer surface from friction against other garments, reducing pilling and keeping colours looking fresh for longer.
3. Skip the tumble dryer
Heat is knitwear's biggest enemy. Instead of tumble drying, lay your sweater flat on a clean towel to dry. Hanging a heavy knit can stretch it out of shape at the shoulders, so flat drying is always the safer option.
4. Deal with pilling gently
A bit of pilling is completely normal, especially in areas with more friction like underarms or where a bag strap sits. A fabric shaver or a simple pilling comb, used gently, will keep your sweaters looking fresh without damaging the knit.
5. Store knitwear folded, not hung
Hanging a sweater on a hanger for long periods can leave stretched shoulders and odd bumps. Fold your knitwear instead and store it in a drawer or on a shelf, ideally with a little breathing room so the fibres don't get compressed.
Quick pick
- Washing: cold cycle, inside out
- Drying: flat on a towel, never tumble dried
- Pilling: gentle fabric comb or shaver
- Storage: folded, not on a hanger
